Jerry West concerned about Warriors’ shot selection, concentration and focus

Warriors consultant Jerry West joined John Lund and me on 95.7-The Game on Thursday and went into depth on the current Warriors team and more. The Warriors are 42-9 at the All-Star break, but listening to West you might not know it sometimes. West said he almost turned off the end of the team’s last game, he was so peeved.

West is a well-know worrywart, and he’s never shy about talking about how a team can get better. So despite the Warriors’ success through 50-plus games, he believes they still have work to do. West did the interview a day after the Warriors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, holding on late after having a big lead.

Here’s some of what West said:

Warriors don’t go to line like opponents, nor should they

As the Warriors head toward the All-Star break, it’s apparent they’re not playing their best ball of the season. Despite an incredible 41-9 record, Golden State’s play has slipped a little in recent weeks, and coach Steve Kerr points his finger at fatigue, which makes sense.

Their cornerstone players — Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson — have played 16 consecutive months of basketball when you factor in Team USA and that’s going to take a toll. Anyway, there are a variety of reasons why the Warriors have slowed down a tad (again, we’re nitpicking here with a 41-9 team), but I’ll tell you what hasn’t been a reason: Officiating.

When the Warriors lose or struggle or are involved in a physical game, there’s often a chorus of complaints from the fans — and they usually center on the fact that the Warriors don’t get to the line enough. Well, they don’t. And they’re probably not going to.

Ray Ratto: On 2014-15 Warriors

Ray Ratto is among the most knowledgeable sportswriters/media personalities in the country/world, and we’re lucky enough to have him in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ratto, who goes back to the ownership days of Franklin Meuli, talked at length about the current version of the Golden State Warriors, the NBA’s hottest story this year.

Can the Warriors win it all? Where will the parade be if and when they do win the NBA title? What three things would Warriors owner Joe Lacob love to do over if he had the chance? Is the new arena in San Francisco destined to ruin one of the last truly special venues in professional sports: Oracle?

Who’s the second-most important player on the Warriors this season? Which are the teams most likely to eliminate Golden State?

Ratto answers all those questions, and makes a point of giving Lacob absolute credit for one thing he did to elevate the Warriors into the league’s elite.

You can listen to Ratto’s thoughts on the Warriors and other sports topics on this week’s Sal and Steiny Podcast:
