Talking two living legends: F&M’s Glenn Robinson and the Warriors’ Stephen Curry

Glad to have done this interview … From Lancaster Online.

The Warriors’ popularity is soaring right now, and it seems like everyone wants to find out more about this team. Even people back in my old neck of the woods (Pennsylvania) want to know what this Warriors’ team is like. Here’s a transcript of an interview I recently did where the subjects were two legends I’ve happened to cross paths with: Glenn Robinson and Stephen Curry.

Of course, you know who Curry is. He ain’t a bad little player. Well, Robinson is a coaching legend at Franklin and Marshall College, and I was lucky enough to play for him. He’s about to become just the fourth coach in NCAA basketball history to win 900 games. The other three: Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, Herb Magee. I was happy to have the opportunity to talk about both Robinson and Curry.

A Berks County native, Matt Steinmetz played four years under legendary men’s basketball coach Glenn Robinson at Franklin & Marshall, graduating in 1986.

Today, Steinmetz is a veteran sports journalist who hosts the “NBA This Week” show and Golden State Warriors’ postgame shows on 95.7-FM The Game in San Francisco.

For two-plus decades, he’s covered San Francisco Bay Area sports, the NBA and the Warriors. Over his career, Steinmetz has been a beat writer, national columnist, analyst and in-game sideline reporter.

Mike Montgomery talks about the Warriors and why they’re changing the way the basketball is being played

Mike Montgomery is someone who knows a little something about basketball in the Bay Area. He was the long-time Stanford coach before taking over on the sidelines for the Golden State Warriors in the mid-2000s. He finished up his coaching career — at least for now — with successful seasons at Cal.

Montgomery joined us on the “NBA This Week” show and talked a lot of Warriors and NBA basketball. Montgomery shared his ideas and impressions on the beauty of Warriors’ basketball, why they’re changing the way the game is played and how to defend Stephen Curry … if there is any kind of a way.

Mike Montgomery coached the Golden State Warriors, Stanford and Cal.

In addition to talking with Montgomery, co-hosts Matt Steinmetz and John Dickinson talked about a variety of Warriors- and NBA-related topics, including whether or not Golden State’s double-overtime victory over the Boston Celtics in Boston was their most impressive win of the year, why Klay Thompson has been brilliant lately and if and when turnovers and/or foul shooting will ever hurt this team.

Some troubling Warriors’ stats that just haven’t mattered

You want to know how good the Warriors are? You could make a case they’re 23-0 and haven’t really completely clicked yet. Sure, it’s a stretch, but it’s also possible. As the Warriors go for No. 24 tonight in Boston against the Celtics, not everything has been picture-perfect, believe it or not.

Tucked away within this record and epic win streak are some less than ordinary numbers from some important players. But you know what? It just doesn’t matter. Regardless of who may be struggling at any given point and time, the reality is that the Warriors have more than compensated by the overall play of the team.

Anyway, here are some nagging numbers that ordinarily might be problematic. But not with this team. Not yet anyway.

Stephen Curry: In the past 17 games, Curry has been a turnover machine and they’re not necessarily accompanied by an abundance of assists. Curry has just 99 assists and a whopping 71 turnovers since early November. During that stretch he’s compiled a 5.8-to-4.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. Those stats would be more troubling if, say, the Warriors ever lost a game.
