As Warriors’ teammate, Monta Ellis did Stephen Curry no favors

The Warriors will visit the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, and in the process will see old friend Monta Ellis. Although “old friend” probably isn’t what Stephen Curry would call him. Then again, Curry just might; he’s that freakin’ good of a guy.

If there’s one guy Curry would have every right to be more than a little rankled at still, it would be Monta Ellis. Nobody did Curry fewer favors in the NBA than Ellis.

As teammates for more than two seasons, Curry and Ellis may embrace before the Warriors-Pacers game, share some pleasantries, make quick talk about their wives and children. After all, it’s been a minute since they played together. Though a cynic might suggest that, yes, they were teammates but they never really did “play together.”

Make no mistake, from the day Curry started his career as a Warrior in 2009 until the day Ellis was traded to Milwaukee in March 2012, Ellis hindered rather than helped Curry.

Within the relentless joy that has become the Warriors over the past season-plus, it’s easy to forget the absolute mess of a situation Curry came into when Golden State drafted him in the summer of 2009.

Remember media day of Curry’s rookie season, in September of that year? That was the day Ellis, the team’s star guard, announced he couldn’t play alongside Curry, whom the Warriors drafted seventh. Also, the team’s starting small forward, Stephen Jackson, reiterated that he wanted to get the hell out of Oakland, sooner rather than later.

Welcome to the Bay, Steph!

The Warriors have become bigger than just basketball

The Golden State Warriors are officially a phenomenon, and that’s what we talked a lot about on the “NBA This Week” show.

The Warriors have the longest sellout streak in the NBA, their television ratings are unprecedented, and tons of bars and restaurants throughout the Bay Area are now packed on nights of Warriors’ games. They are absolutely, positively must-see TV, and they aren’t just a story in the Bay Area or even regionally anymore.

Who would have thought it, but Stephen Curry is now our Magic Johnson, our Larry Bird and, yes, our Michael Jordan. He’s that popular and he’s that good. The Warriors aren’t just an incredible story, they are the biggest story … in all of sports. And this team is your team.

John Dickinson and I also got into specifics about the Western Conference and how it’s beginning to shake out. The boys, while allowing Warriors fans to bask in the glow of a 20-0 start, also reminded the fans that there’s still a team out there the Warriors haven’t gotten over on: The San Antonio Spurs.

Last time Warriors were in Utah, Jazz pinned ‘L’ on Golden State

The Warriors are 18-0, and they go for win No. 19 to start the season on Monday against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City. A win would give the Warriors 23 straight regular-season wins, dating back to last season.

The Warriors are 101-20 overall since the start of last season, so they don’t lose often anymore, anywhere. But the last time they went to Utah – on Jan. 30, 2015 — the Jazz laid a 110-100 defeat on Golden State, and it was one of the Warriors’ least impressive games of the year.

If you take a look at the boxscore from that night, it’s an unusual one for the Golden State Warriors.

The Jazz didn’t do anything overly impressive that night, shooting just 44 percent from the field, including 9-for-25 from 3-point range. But the Jazz won the rebounding battle, 55-41, and held the Warriors to just 8-for-27 shooting from beyond the arc.
