‘Sal and Steiny’: Tough holiday for Warriors, Raiders fans: GSW blows late lead to Cavaliers; Derek Carr’s devastating injury

Jeez, that was a 1-2 punch delivered to Bay Area fans over the weekend. First, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr sustains a season-ending leg injury, and then, in less important stuff, the Warriors blow a 14-point lead to the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

Castaneda and I talked about those topics and also the 49ers’ win, holiday weeks in general, Trent Baalke and Trent Dilfer, media favorites, television ratings, and more.

More thoughts on Warriors-Cavs; offensive pecking orders; Curry’s delicate role & who’s Golden State’s go-to guy?

The Cavs-Warriors game was so good, there’s still plenty more to talk about. Golden State let a 14-point, fourth quarter lead slip away and the Cavs walked away with a stunning 109-108 victory in Quicken Loans Arena.

On “Warriors WrapUp,” the postgame show on 95.7-FM The Game, we talked about a lot of aspects with a lively call-in crowd. I also taped a Sal and Steiny podcast, which has plenty of discussion on the game.

Let’s get into it …

I know it’s not all together rational and sound but I do like the idea of an offensive pecking order … that is a late-game offensive option that for the most part is agreed upon. It’s not unusual for two superstars having to figure that out, but throw in a bona-fide third scorer and it gets more challenging.

Who’s your go-to guy, in other words? For the past few seasons, that player has been Stephen Curry, no question about it. If Curry weren’t taking big shots, he was making something happen for someone else’s big shot. But who is it now? That’s obviously something Steve Kerr and the Warriors are trying to figure out.

‘Warriors WrapUp’: Cavs rally from 14 down to stun Golden State; Irving’s big shot; Curry’s struggles; Cleveland’s defense

It was a Christmas Day classic between the Warriors and Cavaliers on Sunday. The game was intense, had a playoff feeling and it very well could have been a preview of the 2017 NBA Finals.

The Cavaliers rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit and got a tough fadeaway jumper from Kyrie Irving with three seconds remaining to give Cleveland a 109-108 win at Quicken Loans Arena.

If these teams play again in June it will be the first time in NBA history when the same two teams played in three consecutive NBA Finals.

Here are some of the topics that came up on the show:

–Many Warriors fans felt Golden State received a “bad whistle” as they say. There were complaints about the non-technical foul on LeBron James for hanging on the rim, for no call being made on the final possession when Kevin Durant tripped after contact with Richard Jefferson and other “phantom” calls here and there.
